For many of us who travel the coast, Haida Gwaii is one of those elusive places, an archipelago of coastal rainforest isles clinging to the edge of the continental plate. Shaped over millennia, it’s a place that feels profoundly remote.

Alex H., one of our seasoned guides in Haida Gwaii, says that people often don’t quite realize just how far it is from everything. That distance settles in quickly. The stillness, the long pauses dictated by weather and tide, the absence of urgency, all of it invites a slower way of moving through the world. Paddling here offers a rare opportunity to fully unplug, to be present in a way that feels increasingly unfamiliar (and we’re not just talking about the lack of cell reception).
Being so far out there, with the elements asking for your full attention, you fall into a rhythm of patience, acceptance, and humility. Guiding becomes less about leading the way and more about paying attention, reading the weather, listening to the water. Sometimes you have to wait when that’s what the day requires, or put your head down and paddle when you have no other choice. Over time, you begin to understand that the coast sets the pace, not us.
Culture and Stories
When I asked Renée what stands out most to her about Haida Gwaii, she kept coming back to the importance of story. In a place that asks you to slow down and pay attention, stories become another way of listening.
Gwaii Haanas safeguards a remarkable range of habitats, ecosystems, and wildlife, and remains the only place in the world protected from mountaintop to the bottom of the sea floor. But its significance goes beyond conservation alone. This is a living cultural landscape, where protection and stewardship are inseparable from history and responsibility.
Among its most treasured features is the Haida Gwaii Watchmen Program and the cultural village sites the Watchmen protect and care for:
- Ḵ’uuna Llnagaay (Skedans)
- T’aanuu Llnagaay (Tanu)
- Hlk’yah G̱aw G̱a (Windy Bay)
- G̱andll K’in Gwaay.yaay (Hotspring Island)
- SG̱ang Gwaay (Anthony Island), a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
At each site, Watchmen often share deep knowledge of the place, weaving personal stories with generations of lived connection. Through these conversations, everything begins to tie together; the land, the sea, the past and the present. We leave with a deeper understanding of Haida culture, conservation, and the delicate balance that sustains these islands.
Ultimate Gwaii Haanas
Each season, we spend extended time in Gwaii Haanas through our 15-day Ultimate Gwaii Haanas expedition, an extended journey that gives both people and place the time they deserve. With just one departure each year, the trip travels deep into Gwaii Haanas, visiting the majority of its cultural sites. This is a journey for true adventurers, and for many, it becomes a once-in-a-lifetime experience, not because of how much ground is covered, but because of how fully immersed you become.
Visitation to Gwaii Haanas is carefully limited, with only a small number of operators granted access each year. After many seasons paddling here, we hold deep respect for the relationships that make these journeys possible and for the responsibility that comes with travelling here.
